The Serious Fraud Office has laid charges against two – currently unnamed – individuals in conjunction with its investigation into the New Zealand First Foundation.
This is hardly surprising, given the strong evidence that the foundation was being used to circumvent donation laws, channelling donations to the party without declaring them.
Whatever the next steps, it’s worth remembering that this is just one of four current scandals surrounding donations to New Zealand’s largest political parties. Charges have been laid against several individuals regarding donations to National, and investigations are ongoing into donations to Labour at both national and local levels. Surely we need to do something to clean up this mess.
